India has solidified its position as a leading manufacturer in the global switchgear industry, driven by robust domestic demand and strategic government initiatives. In February 2022, Vivek Kumar Dewagan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Power, highlighted the nation’s progress, stating, “It is very satisfactory to see that India has become one of the leading manufacturers of switchgear. We intend to lend a supporting hand to the industry, ranging from setting up manufacturing units to investing in revamping the entire infrastructure.”
The government’s commitment to infrastructure development and rural electrification has significantly boosted the switchgear sector. Ambitious targets, such as achieving 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022, have further propelled the demand for advanced switchgear solutions. This focus on sustainable energy has encouraged manufacturers to innovate, leading to the development of smart and energy-efficient switchgear products.
Industry leaders are actively contributing to this growth. For instance, L&T Switchgear, now rebranded as Lauritz Knudsen Electrical and Automation, has announced plans to invest approximately ₹850 crore over the next three years. This investment aims to enhance their manufacturing capabilities and expand their product offerings in the low and medium voltage segments, catering to diverse sectors such as infrastructure, industries, buildings, homes, and agriculture.
The financial performance of key players underscores the industry’s upward trajectory. ABB India reported a 21% increase in third-quarter profits in 2024, driven by heightened demand for electrification products. The company’s total orders rose by 11% to ₹33.42 billion, with significant contributions from its electrification and motion segments.
As India continues to prioritize energy efficiency and smart infrastructure, the switchgear industry is poised for sustained growth, reinforcing the country’s status as a pivotal player in the global market.
